Atascadero is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California, located in Contra Costa County. It was founded on December 12, 1849 by forty-six men who left Independence, Missouri to begin what would be a six-year journey across the United States. The town's name means "safe place." Atascadero prospered as a ranching and agricultural center during the late 19th century and early 20th century. In 1912, Atascadero became an incorporated city. The population of Atascadero peaked at over 10,000 in 1939 before declining gradually until reaching its current levels of around 7,500 in 2000. The history of Atascadero begins with Manuel Nieto, who arrived in 1824 from Chihuahua City and started trading goods with the local ranchers in what is now Contra Costa County. In 1827 he married Maria Encinas y Arellano and set out for Rancho Pastoria de los Tejas (now part of San Francisco). They platted and named their land Rancho San Carlos de Atascaderos (later Rancho Los Arroyos). The first post office was established at this site on October 26, 1830. After two years of operation, they moved to the more spacious Adobe Plantation which sat atop a hill overlooking present day Paso Robles Avenue. A new courthouse was built here between 1833 and 1840; it burned down but not before providing evidence that such construction could be done without having to pay for fire insurance! In 1839 John Sutter discovered gold near modern-day Escondido when prospectors found quartz veins along Santa Cruz Creek bedding his land grant from Governor Ygnacio Martinez. This led to increased demand for goods coming from mines at Fillmore Gulch east of Sacramento; this area later became known as Gold Country because so much gold was found there! Selected individuals bought or leased vast stretches of valley floor where mining commenced; many were Mexican American immigrants such as José Ignacio Carrera Sr., Sepulveda Pacheco and Mariano Castro who had come north under contract from Mexico City’s rich families seeking access to large acreages deemed “free” by Californios under US rule because they were not subject to taxation by Mexico City’s Gobernadoría de Justicia (governorate) like other Native Americans or Mexicans residing within its jurisdiction! A group including Carrera formed themselves into a company called Don Miguel Cabañas & Co., which began producing flour direct from the ground while also operating saw mills northeast of Sacramento; these operations soon produced most alloys needed for cannons used by both Spanish forces fighting against American settlers on behalf of Mexico as well as Ulysses S Grant’s forces occupying California during the Civil War! Over time sugar beet production developed too – leading farmers growing sugarcane on hillsides east & west of downtown Ascaleda starting about 1850 turned increasingly toward raising horses & buggies (& later rails) transporting produce hundreds or even thousands miles upriver from coastal towns where transportation costs were prohibitively expensive! With Rapid growth came increasing social tensions – primarily pertaining to race due largely to Anglo newcomers exploiting native labor resources while Gaston revolver murders whipped up fear & violence throughout unnecessary displays intended only To madden locals!) With few exceptions many Victorians chose prudence rather than insurrectionism – settling down eventually& becoming productive members Of their respective communities!! However events render that hope increasingly moot: Development proceeds unchecked while Gabino Bandera leads numerous secessionist insurgencies inside Mexican territory culminating In His captureByUlyssesS Grant consequent InvasionWhich leads directlyTo20 YearsOf Porfirio DiazPuppetGovernor !!
