In 1851 Mexican nationals arrived seeking passage to Oregon through this region and began ranching along portions of today's I-5 corridor south of Sacramento County; these settlers were known as padres or priests because their main activity was missionary work among the Chumash people who lived adjacent to them on Mono Lake. In 1861 Mexican officials approved plans for a new settlement at Rancho Rinconada which would be located about 12 miles east of today's downtown AtascadERO
