According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,711 people, 517 households, and 388 families residing in the town. The population density was 26 people per square mile (10/km²). There were 653 housing units at an average density of 16 per square mile (6/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 95% White (of any race), 2% African American, 0% Native American, 1% Asian Pacific Islander, and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3%.

Atascadero is a small town in San Joaquin County, California, United States. It is located about 30 miles (48 km) east of Fresno and 15 miles (24 km) west of Stockton on Highway 101. The population was 9,752 at the 2010 census. Atascadero has been inhabited by Native Americans for over three thousand years. The first Europeans to visit Atascadero were the Spanish in 1769 when they explored the area as part of their attempt to find a route from San Francisco to Monterey Bay. They named it "Atascadero" after the Atacama Desert where they had seen anchedones. The first permanent European settlers arrived in 1847 when John Sutter came down the Oroville River from Sacramento with his brother-in-law, George Humboldt, and founded the city of Sacramento on Rancho Partido de la Union near what is now Crescent City. In 1850, Jens Christensen started ranching in what is now Atascadero and built a house there that still stands today. The first post office was established at Rancho Partido de la Union in 1851; it was moved to its present site two years later. In 1861, James Wickersham bought 740 acres (280 ha) of land northeast of AtascadERO from Enrique Crespo and began developing it into what is now known as Wickersham Heights Parkland Preserve. Wickersham also developed some adjacent buildings including his home which still stands today within park boundariesToday's Stinson Beach neighborhood lies just south of Wickersham Heights Park while Playground Hill lies north across Highway 101 from downtown Atascadero proper
Atascadero is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 24,827 at the 2010 census. Atascadero and its adjacent unincorporated community of Saugus are located on the western edge of San Bernardino County, approximately east-northeast of downtown Los Angeles. The town was first established in 1853 by men who had been given land near what is now Mt Carmel Avenue and Sand Hills Drive in what is now the city of Pasadena. They named their settlement after Atascadero Creek which flows through their land. The town site was surveyed in 1854 and platted in 1858. It became part of the larger municipality of San Bernardino on February 14, 1860. In 1912, an act to rename all incorporated areas within Los Angeles counties after military generals occurred as a result of World War I when Southern California was placed under military control due to the war effort. In response to this designation, Atascaderos incorporation application was filed with Los Angeles County on November 3, 1912. On December 5th, 1912 the Town Plats were published and it became known as "Atascadero". On October 1st 1913 Anthony J Fenton imported 50 acres (20 ha) from Pasadena for use as a citrus orchard; he named it "Fenton Orchard" after himself and his brother-in-law John Haddock Fenton (1848-1922). It would eventually include over 100 acres (40ha) making it one of the largest citrus orchards west of Orange County - rivaling those at Citrus Heights and Riverside just north of LAX airport area! Today's property includes much older wild grape vines that date back to Rancho Cucamonga days – see map below: After World War II most heavy industry left for southern California – but not AtascadERO! After years during which no development took place because there were few jobs available outside/nearby LASD school district boundaries…..this changed when several large companies moved into new buildings centralizing offices across from LASDHS campus……….the old infrastructure could finally be put back together using outdated methods such as water usage rates being lowered to encourage redevelopment instead…..and so began what has become known as “The Renaissance” period for Atascadero…..
