Atascadero is one of the oldest cities in California and has been founded by the Yokuts people who first arrived in 1769. It became a Mexican town named Pueblo de Atascadero on November 15, 1821 following its annexation by Mexico City. The original name of the city may have been "Atencario" which means "place of beautiful flowers." The city's rich history can be traced back to its founding when the Yokuts people first arrived in 1769. They were farmers and ranchers who built their villages near the present-day intersection of State Route 128 and Mission Road. Atencario was officially founded on November 15, 1821 as part of Mexico City's annexation of Alta California into her empire following the Mexican–American War (1846-48). As part of this process, Alta California was divided into several colonial provinces under Spanish leadership including Baja California and Los Angeles County. Atencando was one of these jurisdictions which included areas now within San Luis Obispo County including Atascadero Creek Valley and Rancho Grande de Santa Clara Valley east of downtown San Luis Obispo; San Miguel Creek Valley and Rancho El Cajon northwest of downtown San Luis Obispo; and portions now within Ventura County such as Morro Bay Naval Air Station northeast of Oxnard and Isla Vista south of Thousand Oaks. During most parts OFSAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY during that time period there WERE no more than 10 or 12 dwellings even though our area today includes over 60 square miles! Most all these dwellings were built by soldiers/mentors brought over from New Spain to help garrison our new colony while also helping with agricultural production etc... We must remember that prior to 1800 only men could hold land titles so property ownership had not yet evolved as it does today! In fact until about 1840 women did not even have voting rights in any parish or municipality!!! So great terrain & many water sources made for some very prosperous years for our early settlers but unfortunately we are losing alot due to lack off Main Street Infrastructure especially with regards to transportation... sorry about that folks!
Atascadero was founded by José Antonio Carrera on October 20, 1797. It became a Mexican land grant to Juan Francisco de la Hoz on November 3, 1824. Atascadero was part of the Alta California Colony and Mission District. The area now known as Atascadero was first populated by Native Americans and Mission Indians in the late 18th century. The padres founded San Miguel Arcángel (1805), Monterey (1821), and Santa Clara (1825). In 1847, during the Mexican–American War, General Manuel Micheltorena advanced east from San Diego over the Baja California Peninsula towards Atascadero. After an engagement with Micheltorena at Tuba Pass on February 6, 1848, Spanish forces retreated from Atascadero towards Mazatlan. On February 9, 1848, General José Márquez y Costilla ordered artillery to bombard Atascadero; the bombardment destroyed most or all of the town's buildings and killed many people.
