The first Europeans to visit Atascadero were Francisco Pizarro and his men in 1542. In 1821, Manuel Michelin founded the first post office in what is now Atascadero. The town was named after José de Atascadero y Costilla, who had been killed while fighting with Felipe I of Mexico against Napoleonic forces during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). The wine industry began to be developed in Atascadero in the late 1800s. One of a few places where red wine can be produced from several different grape varieties, Atascaderos wines are known for their tannins and acidity. Over time, other crops have also been grown around here including almonds, cornmeal and tomatoes; however, it remains one of only a handful places in California that produces Shiraz wine from three different grape types: Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Chardonnay. Today's residents are descendants of those that populated this community when it was founded over 150 years ago. Incorporated into the city limits of Santa Barbara on January 1st 1893 by voters living within city limits but outside City Hall precinct boundaries - they remain citizens even though they live within city limits today!

Atascadero is a city in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 24,853 at the 2010 census. Atascadero is part of the Pacific Beach–Santa Cruz–Atascadero Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Atascadero were Spanish missionaries who arrived in 1769 and named it "San Miguel". The first permanent residents were Native Americans who called it "Tse'ehtaalik", meaning "the place where the sun sets." In 1824, José Maria Vizcaino surveyed and founded an Rancho Atascadero de las Animas on what is now Punta Honda Boulevard. Juan Bautista Alvarado purchased the rancho in 1827 and renamed it AtascadERO after his father-in-law's birthplace, Ateca (now Tehuantepec), Mexico. In 1854, Isidro Ortiz built a small adobe cabin near present day University Avenue and Pico Boulevard for his wife María Cristina Ortiz y Gálvez as their home base while he worked as a land agent for Hiram Clarke Dodge & Company. On October 15 of that year, during Mexican Independence Day celebrations (), Ortiz publically declared himself independent from Mexico and set up his own government with a tribunal known as the Judicial Branch of San Francisco de Asís (). On November 6th of that year he married María del Carmen Carrillo which made him also president of this branch of government. One hundred years later on January 8th 2019 San Luis Obispo County Supervisor Donny Hathaway announced that they had found new evidence which suggests Ortiz may have been involved with spying for Mexico during this time period
Atascadero was founded on November 3, 1873 by James W. Atascadero and his wife Eliza A. Atascadero. The first post office in the town was opened in 1874. It served as a stop on the Central Pacific Railroad. The town's population grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location at the mouth of the San Joaquin River. In 1907, Atascadero became an incorporated city with a population of about 20,000 people. In 1912, Atascaderosports connections were established when it annexed to Berkeley County and Berkeley Municipal Airport was built there. On July 1, 1944, Bay City Radio Corporation (BCR) began operations from studios located in downtown Atascadoro and began broadcasting over AM radio west of Sacramento before moving its transmitter eastward to just south of downtown in 1951 On October 2nd 1957 BCR changed its call sign to KQED-FM after buying "The Golden State Patriot" which had been broadcasting from Redding since 1941
