In the early days of the Atascadero Valley, miners and their families lived and worked in small towns along the valley floor. The southern end of the valley was rich in silver and gold, while the central and northern portions were more lightly populated. The first major effort to extract silver and gold from Atascadero occurred in 1828 when a group of Spanishmen led by José Joaquín Mora organized a mining expedition. The expedition resulted in some discovery but no significant production. In 1833, an American Explorations Company team mined at San Fernando de Atascadero but found no silver or gold. This led to speculation that another mine could be located within Atascadero proper. In 1835, Manuel Nieto leased 1,000 acres of land on which he planned to build a large copper mine. But due to low copper prices and insufficient resources, Nieto never started construction. Instead he devoted his attention to developing his other properties in the valley. In 1840, another American exploration company tried unsuccessfully to explore an area near San Miguel de Allende with hopes of finding new sources of silver and gold ore. This experience convinced Americans that there must be something valuable buried beneath Atascaderedo soil! In 1850, Mexican forces invaded California as part of Mexico's War for Independence; this caused many Anglo-American settlers in California to leave their homes behind (and many people who stayed did not have access to cotton). About 50 percent of those who leftarroted Atascadero were men; women usually stayed behind with their children or husbands working on farms outside the city limits during this time period (the exception being one woman who decided to take up residence within city limits)). At this point most people living within city limits had either abandoned their homes or been forced out by war or poverty conditions inside Mexico City itself. A few women however decided it would be better for them live close enough so they could participate fully in both cultural aspects of Mexican life as well as provide support for their male counterparts when needed (e.g., cooking food for soldiers). Some women even set up businesses selling goods produced inside Mexico City such as textiles and groceries while others took up residence near public housing developments known as “estancia” because they enjoyed good water quality and easy access to markets/restaurants - areas that are still present today inside downtown Los Angeles despite becoming much more residential over time!
