Atascadero is an unincorporated community in Monterey County, California, United States. It lies at an elevation of 4,811 feet (1,362 m). Atascadero Creek flows through the community. The name Atascadero comes from the Spanish word "atrascado" meaning "hidden or dark." The early residents of Atascadero were Spanish-speaking Franciscan monks who came to Monterey County in 1827 to establish a mission. They named their town after Saint Augustine of Hippo because they thought he would protect them from Native Americans and Mexican traders. In 1846, when Mexico gained independence from Spain, it decided to annex Monterey County. The Mexican government built a road leading into the county and called the town AtascadERO for its new inhabitants. The first post office was established in 1849; it was renamed San Francisco on January 1, 1851. The peak of growth for Atascadero occurred during World War II when many American military personnel stationed in Monterey County worked on naval shipsyards and military airfields. Many people who lived near these facilities were drafted into the war and had little choice but to move to escape the draft or work long hours on production lines that were located close by.
