The first rifle shooting competition in Atascadero was held in 1892 and took place on a ranch east of town. The last gun sling user in Atascadero was Mrs. Lillie Ellerbeck who died on July 1, 1912.

Atascadero, California is a town in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 7,851 at the 2010 census. Atascadero's name comes from the Atascadero River and its respective mountain ranges that make up the town's landscape. The first European to visit Atascadero was an American padre, Father José de la Cruz y Durán on July 14th 1769. He named it after Tejano Indian village of Atenciopec near modern-day Santa Maria del Oro. Work began on a Mission San Antonio de Padua on land purchased by Captain James Cook in 1795 and completed in 1803 under Spanish guidance. In 1821 Mexican nationals established Mission Concepción 2 miles (3 km) east of present day AtascadERO when they reclaimed part of Rancho Rinconada granted to José María Peralta by Governor Manuel Micheltorena on October 26th 1820. In 1886 Wagon Wheel Inn & B&B became one of first hotels in the U.S., while The Overland Mail published its first edition from downtown San Luis Obispo The townspeople built their own water system and schoolhouse in 1895 but discontinued services due to budget cuts by local officials during World War I; however, public works continued through the war with some assistance from military officers who lived nearby barracks and ate at local restaurants which provided employment for locals during peacetime.) From 1926 until 1957 Atascadero had its own post office which was moved to Paso Robles because of low mail volumes there). In 1957 the towns consolidated into one municipality with a municipal seat located at San Lorenzo Creek where most businesses are situated today including several hospitals as well as many shopping centers such as Sanger Plaza Shopping Center (opened in 1984), Cove City Mall (opened in 1990), Redondo Beach mall (1989), Northridge mall (1991) and finally online retail giant Amazon’s fulfillment center just outside city limits.) As early as 1840 Hernandez reported “a very rich copper mine has been discovered at this place [Atascado]...the ore being carted away daily by mules” However this report seems not to have been followed up since no other mines were ever found or developed within 10 years! Copper production only really started happening after 1860 when various smelters were opened along the coast providing more jobs for people living nearby! Mines here produced mainly lead but also zinc ores occasionally! Despite this modest output typical Californian silvermining operations didn't begin until about 1870 so we can assume that if these reports did happen then it must have been pretty early days for Atascado unfortunately like most places there wasn't much written about it till later!! Mining activity stopped completely around 1950 however environmental damage had already begun so over time various bits and pieces have gradually accumulated making restoration work necessary starting back in earnest about 1970!!! Unfortunately some areas still look much worse than they once did thanks largely to decades of rainwater infiltration!) There are currently 5 mines operating here: Salmon Canyon Mine(Class IIA Lead & Zinc); Donner Well Gold Mine(Lead & Zinc); Sierra Blanca Gold Mine(Zinc); Millard Fillmore Silver Mine(Silver/Gold); Anacapa Copper mine(Copper/Lead). Historical silver production values ranged between 400 lbs and 1 tonne per year thoughMuch lower quantities (~10 oz) given current levels of exploration!
Atascadero is a city in San Luis Obispo County, California. The population was 25,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and is located on the Atascadero Peninsula on the eastern edge of San Luis Obispo county. The first Europeans to visit Atascadero were traders from Spain who landed there in 1769. They built a small mission called San Lorenzo de Atascadero and named their corresponding creek after it, which today's River Atascadero originates from. Captain Don Fernando Menéndez de Avila led an expedition to explore Santa Cruz Bay in 1602 and discovered the peninsula; he named it Isla de los Reyes Católicos (Island of the Catholic Kings). In 1824, José Joaquín Murillo y Zúñiga founded Rancho Santa Margarita Mexican land grant here that included present-day AtascadERO Peninsula. The town began as a small military outpost with only 8 residents in 1827 when U.S. Commodore John Davenport chartered USS "San Cristobal" to supply troops during the Mexican–American War.
