However, most of what is now Atascaderos downtown core was built up during Prohibition Era prohibition measures which targeted smuggling activities emanating from nearby Paso Robles wine country; specifically marijuana growing operations which were often hidden behind buildings on First Street near US 101 interchange until busts led law enforcement to raid those areas beginning in 1986 (Operation Grapeseed). This case also helped lead to an overall decrease in crime rates during that era with resultant benefits for businesses involved therein such as arrests made for offenses like larceny/theft/counterfeiting totaling only 7 crimes per 100,000 residents from 1985-1991 instead of over 100 per 100,000 during earlier decades
