In 1945, Atascadero was incorporated as a city under state law and began experiencing rapid growth as a result of its status as a major cultural center. Atascadero is a small town located in San Joaquin County, California. Atascadero has been inhabited by the Ohlone people for over 7,000 years. The first European to visit Atascadero was Captain John Crespo of the Portuguese ship do Sacramento in 1542. In 1834, Spanish missionaries founded a mission at Atascadero and named it Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. In 1875, the Mexican government established Baja California as an Anglo-Mexican province and Atascadero became part of Baja California. In 1912, Atascadero was annexed into the City of San Bernardino and currently has a population of around 350 residents. The city began to experience significant growth in the early 20th century due to its strategic location on Highway 101 between Fresno and Stockton. The city's success led to its incorporation as a full-fledged municipality in 1911. This addition allowed Forrester Drugs Inc., which had emerged as one of San Bernardino's leading businesses, to invest heavily in developing the area and make it one of their most important locales. The company helped create jobs and attract new business owners who helped drive rapid growth throughout the 1920s and 1930s; during this time period, Atascaderos saw an increase in population from just 581 residents to more than 1,200 by 1940. By 1941 however, economic hard times had taken their toll on the city's population; within 5 years there were only 191 residents remaining inside the boundaries of what is now known as downtown Atascadorro (although some people still call that area "Old downtown"). Despite this decline in fortunes Gunnar & Esther Kappelwasser - two German immigrants who started up a family grocery store on Main Street - continue to operate Kappels' Gourmet Grocery Store until they died at age 90+ years old in 1984 after servingsince 1951 when they opened their shop next door on Spring Avenue adjacent to El Centro High School (now known as Chavez Ravine Elementary). Today much of downtown Atascadorro remains vacant save for an office building housing City Hall which used to be home also to El Centro High School before being replaced by Chavez Ravine Elementary school; rackets are still played out front during lunchtime pursuant To tradition On October 17th 1906 Supervisor Hagerty ordered all fire engines stationed along Railroad Street pulled back 10 feet due excessive heat created by heavy attendance at Races speakeasy hosted by Harry Sinclair In 1917 public works worker James Harrigan was killed while throwing water onto strikers burning down house near railroad tracks north side
