The first Europeans to visit Atascadero were the Franciscan friars who founded a Mission San Gabriel Arcángel in 1795. A year later, James Hahn and his party arrived on horseback from Santa Fe with plans to cross the Mojave Desert into what is now Southern California. They camped near present-day Highway 395 on November 13, 1827 before continuing their journey northward and reaching Atascadero on December 2. In 1847, José García de Lara y Sánchez established Rancho El Conejo (later Rancho Atascadero) within Chilean territory after being granted land by Governor Manuel Micheltorena.During Mexican rule over this area, few white people ventured east of Baja California until 1846 when US Commodore John D’Arcy Lightfoot discovered gold off Point Conception about 25 miles south of San Francisco Bay and decided to explore it further. On July 26 he sent Lieutenant George Vancouver with a squadron of five ships including HMS Beagle to explore British Columbia while under Spanish command; Lt.(jg.) John Francis Drake led HMS Discovery along side Vancouver during their reconnaissance trip which also resulted in discovery of Juan Fernández Islands group off Northern California’s coast as well as Tongva (now Yucca Valley) tribe residing thereabouts east of Baja Peninsula northwest of Yuma River). Lieutenant Lightfoot took possessionof both islands from Spain but abandoned them due to lack of resources when gold was discovered at Fort Tejon on October 24th, 1849 although no claims were made for these lands until 1862 when they were given back to Chile by President Fillmore following Congressional action known as “Gadsden Purchase” After Mexico gained independence from Spain in1821 American settlers began flowing into central California seeking new opportunities following news that silver had been found In 1848 an Act was passed entitled The Law Of Land Acquisition said: ". . . all public land not leased or sold by virtue thereof shall be reserved for public use subject only to such restrictions as may be prescribed by law." In 1912, Atascaderos population reached 2,000 people. By 1925, only 150 people lived in the community. In 1944, all but 10 residents of AtascadERO moved to nearby San Bernardino when that city became an incorporated municipality. In 1977-79, much of what is now Atascadero were destroyed by fire caused by faulty burning practices at three local oil refineries which were then being operated by Shell Oil Company

In 1849, the first post office was established in Atascadero. By 1861, the population of Atascaderto had reached 3,000 people. In 1865, a train station was built in Atascadero. In 1892, an electric streetcar system was installed in Atascadero. A new high school was built in 1925 and named for Bishop Manuel García Murphy. The population of Atascadero increased to over 10,000 people by 1930; however, the economy declined during World War II because of closed factories and a lack of food production. The population decreased again during the postwar period until it peaked at around 15,000 people in 1987; however, since then it has been declining slowly due to various factors including a decrease in residential housing values and an increase in automobile ownership.
