Atascadero is a small town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 5,157 at the 2010 census. Atascadero was established in 1847 by Spanish settlers as part of Rancho Cañon de la Hacienda. It became a city on July 1, 1961. The first European to visit Atascadero was Gaspar de Portolà who named it "Xalapa" on November 14, 1769 for his crossing of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec into Mexico City from Veracruz. Captain Cook named it Los Angeles Bay on October 6, 1770 while sailing along the coast of Baja California Sur He again called it "Mojave" or "Xalapa" on February 3rd 1800 upon his return from an expedition up the Mexican Coast and noted that there were two Canals running through this place bearing its Name- one near Mission Dolores and another in the Valley of Xalapa which we now call downtown AtascadERO In 1847 land given by Governor Manuel Micheltorena to José Joaquín Cáceres y Valdés forthe establishment of a Mission at La Venta south of present day Atascadero Creek became known as Rancho Cañon de la Hacienda after Antonio Gomez de la Cruz -- its first owner. The name Atascadoros (meaning “at” + “california”) was selected by Juan Antonio Rivera y Hurtado as the townsite's name because he found driftwood here which he believed had originated from Abyssinia (now Ethiopia). A post office called La Venta was founded in 1851, but closed due to lack of mail demand when trains arrived in town during those years A group led by Lorenzo Mendiola bought some additional land east of town in 1858 and founded Villa Mendiola withadobe walls and other improvements including a schoolhouse and irrigation systems. During World War II veteran Ellis Pritchard built what is now called Pritchard Air Force Base adjacent to Vista del Lago across Frome Road from where he could watch bombers fly over populated targets in Los Angeles while feeling like an Interceptor ace himself On July 1st 1961 Los Angeles annexed most all Handyman's local government area making Atascaderos city limits with a total population just over 5,000 people although trade still takes place between residents and their surrounding rural communities . With rapid growth came increased public services such as water supply (1962), Streets & Roads (1968), Parks & Recreation (1972), waste management(1974) followed by libraries (1976), police department (1978), fire department (1981) . In 1990 city hall moved from its original location next to Highways 59 & 1010E into new permanent building completed 1998 !! Today much of downtown business district is filled with new buildings erected during past several decades following annexation by Downtown LA

Atascadero is a city in the County of San Luis Obispo, California. The population was 34,821 at the 2010 census. It is located on the north coast of San Luis Obispo County and is bordered by Carpinteria to the east, Atascadero Creek to the west, Morro Bay to the south, and Arroyo Seco to the north. The downtown district includes many buildings from 1853-1870 styled Beaux Arts architecture. The first white settlers arrived in what is now Atascadero in 1833 with David Jones and his brother John as part of a group of 11 men led by José de la Cruz. They founded a small adobe ranch named Rancho Los Nietos y Atascadero which means "Netherlands Point and Atascadero". The original town site was on anual stream called Punta Arenas that emptied into Arroyo Seco. In 1835, two brothers by the name of Humboldt started another small ranch named Rancho La Casa Blanca near where modern day US 101 crosses Arroyo Seco opposite Gaviota Park beaches. A few years later they moved their operations across US 101 to what is now known as Rancho Gaviota which included most of today's suburbs including Pacific Beach, Santa Barbara City (now Santa Barbara), caves Offline map Google map , Mission Bayou Dulce , Playa del Rey & more... In 1850, it was decided that a new town be built on some high ground between present day Gaviota Park Boulevard and Arroyo Grande Avenue due to concerns about land transportation during that time period being difficult & dangerous due to wild horses running free across country trails connecting different parts of California (& adjacent Mexico). On July 15th 1850 $10 worth OF SILVER was deposited with Don José Vasquez y Costilla at Alvarado Mansion (later called Hotel Monterey) for use in building a road from Paso Robles up through present day AtascadERO making it possible for goods arriving or departing from Monterey Harbor to be transported directly into or out of this new town without havingTo go through Salinas or Bakersfield either side... This event became known as " el Día de los Derechos" (the Day Of Rights) because all citizens were given the right then & there to purchase any necessary property within THE NEWtown limits FREE OF CHARGE! As you can imagine things got very exciting over these next few years with rich buyers & sellers checking out all sorts of properties before making offers/buying etc.. After 3 decades developing around 100 acres +/- this original Townsite 10 blocks wide 2 streets deep LOTS OF HOUSEHOLD STUFF WAS BUILT UP HERE BEFORE ANYONE EVEN KNEW ABOUT ATASCADERO... Today we still enjoy access to all those goodies thanks To our wonderful ++ Mayor Kevin Faulconer who has made us one HELLOF A CITY!!!
