Atascadero is located on the western edge of Bakersfield, about 20 miles north-northwest of downtown Los Angeles. The first Europeans to visit Atascadero were the Spanish in 1777, who named it San José de la Laguna after a mission founded by Franciscan friars nearby. In 1821, Rancho Pasco was granted to Captain Manuel Nieto and his brother Vicente for land that extended from Santiago Canyon eastward to what is now Atascadero. The brothers divided the property into tracts and developed it into a ranchland with scattered houses and outbuildings. The first post office in Atascaderos began serving in 1868; it was moved to its current location one block south of present day Main Street in 1876. The townsite had no school until 1908 when It opened under state auspices as part of Katella Hills School District No. 3 which included most of Kern County then including Bakersfield and other smaller communities northwest of Los Angeles like Redding and Hanford. In 1912 local dentist Drury Pyle established himself at 4555 Main Street in what became known as "the White House" due to its striking white facade carved from red volcanic ashlarstone quarried nearby at Bishop's Rock Quarry (now within City Limits Pasadena). From 1916 until his death in 1984, Pyle served as Mayor pro tempore of Pasadena Municipal Court #1 (which then included all but portions of Los Angeles County) during some very controversial years when city hall tried—and failed—to get just enough votes from council members to override vetoes from mayor Gil Cedillo; finally succeeding only because two thirds or more each councilmember were absent or not available for meetings at that time due to travel related appointments or personal business outside city limits (including many residents living on adjacent properties which they could see but couldn't vote on). Atascadero is a town in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 14,000 at the 2000 census. Atascadero is part of the San Luis Obispo-Paso Robles Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Atascadero were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and Gaspar de Portolà on October 24, 1769, during their voyage from Mexico City to Monterey Bay. They named it "Alacazá" (野島), after the Acre tree in Peru which they saw while sailing from Almagro Point to San Francisco Bay. In 1821, AtascadERO became part of Mexican Empire as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo with U.S.A., ending the Mexican War for Independence. American Commodore John Capps arrived at anchor outside town on September 12, 1821 and ordered all his men ashore to collect arms and munitions needed for war against Mexico. After days of loading and unloading supplies ashore he anchored again off town on September 15th when word reached him that Santa Clara had also joined forces with Mexico and attacked American vessels near Pismo Beach; Commodore Capps knew this would lead to open warfare between Americans and Mexicans if he didn't leave quickly! On October 3rd 1821 USS Constitution under Captains James Kappecker & George Vancouver sailed into harbor just inside Atascadero's limits watching as cannons saluted them before leaving without stopping for refreshments or taking advantage of its advantageous position 8 miles offshore! The first use of firearms incendiary torpedoes by a maritime power had been made history! This event solidified America's presence in Central America chokepoint until well into the 19th century when Panama Canal opened up!!
