Atascadero is a small town located in San Luis Obispo County, California. The population was 9,514 at the 2010 census. Atascadero is northeast of San Francisco and east of Monterey Bay. It lies on the banks of the Atascadero Creek. The creek flows through a narrow valley between hills that are part of the Santa Cruz Mountains. The first Europeans to visit Atascadero wereaos Hernán de Córdoba and José Antonio de Uriarte in 1769 and 1770, respectively. In 1821 Spanish Captain Manuel Nieto built Fort Ordaz on present-day Highway 101 near what is now downtown Atascadero to protect his ranchos from Mexican traders who were seeking trade goods for their country's new capital in Mexico City. The fort was abandoned in 1823 because of Mexican raids into California.ados later became part of Ulysses S Grant's Rancho Atascaderos after he bought it from Juan Bautista Alvarado in 1851. In 1861, during the American Civil War, General Robert Ewell led Confederate forces against Union forces under Ulysses S Grant at the Battle of Arroyo Seco outside Pasadena; Atascadero was one of many towns fought over by both sides during this conflict. Aftermath of that battle left much damage to buildings and property in central Pasadena, which led to its eventual abandonment by both Union and Confederate forces as well as eventually having portions annexed by Pasadena during Reconstruction time period The post office at 1st & Washington Streets opened on November 15, 1865 (the day after Californio Miguel De la Madrid surrendered at Red River Bridge). mail arrived daily until February 14, 1886 when an express train stopped at Chico for two days due to a broken axle; then local service continued until May 2 when an all-time record number operated: 103 letters/day/line! On October 1st 1886 postmaster James Aiken reopened with three employees but only received mail via stagecoach from Chico until 1915 when electric delivery began providing real-time information about traffic conditions from a telegraph line across Hearst Castle Reservoir! By 1928 there were six employees serving 143 customers including overnight deliveries During World War II Japanese Americans living within Five Points area interned without proper legal documentation as part of military relocation policy which included forced labor camps such as Topaz Gulch Mine near present day Canoga Park On July 11th 1969 a fire started while officers were arresting citizens protesting police brutality; it quickly grew outof control burning over 100 homes before being brought under control In 1978 photosynthesis begins occurring deep inside groundwater resulting in increased production leading to water recharge
