In 1851, General José Figueroa moved the American troops stationed at Fort Tejon south to Yuma after they were forced out of San Francisco because of gold Rush Fever. In 1865, General James Wiltse discovered oil fields near AtascadERO and decided to develop them into a major petroleum refining center known as “the Rancho Salejo” This started what would become one of America’s largest oil production programs
Atascadero was founded by Hernando de Soto in 1699. At the time, it was the most northerly outpost of Spanish California. The town prospered as a base of operations for fur traders and missionaries who travelled through the region. In 1836, Atascadero became a Mexican territory after Mexico's victory over United States forces at Buena Vista Heights. The town continued to prosper until the early 1800s when gold discoveries in central California began to take hold. With new arrivals from Central America and Asia, AtascadERO began to lose its significance as a mining center. By 1851, only a few small businesses remained in the town. In 1859, following Superior County's admission into statehood, AtascadorO again lost its importance as an agricultural center due to increased competition from nearby San Bernardino County. However, during the late 19th century and into the early 20th century, AtascadorO experienced growth as an arts community thanks in part to its location on Highway 101A which linked central California with Los Angeles and other eastern valleys.
