Atascadero is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California, located just south of Fresno. The population was 41,711 as of the 2010 census. Atascadero is part of the Fresno-Toiyabe Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first established in 1835 by George Atchison and his wife Lucy, who named their new settlement "Atascadero" after Mount Atascadero in northern Argentina. The discovery of gold in California in 1848 led to increased mining activity in the San Joaquin Valley, which resulted in more people and businesses moving to AtascadEROtOWN during the 1850s. The townsite at present- day Atascadero was organized as a city on November 15, 1859 with a population of about 400 people. In 1870, Doniphan & Sons Mining Company brought over an estimated 10 million dollars worth of gold nuggets from Spring County, Nevada to be mined at Atascadoro Creek near what is now downtown Atsacado. There were many mills and mines built throughout the years around Atsacado creek because it offered easy access to water and good soil for farming; some still remain today including: Doniphan’s Mill (founded 1865), Great Western Mills (1875), Noyes’ Paper Works (1898), and First National Bank (1910). Doniphan's Mill started production on December 12th 1865 using local water power from Atsacado Creek; it continued until 1907 when it became part of Pacific Electric Railway's Northern Division mill complex #2 operated by Chicagoans John Hynes and Harry Hynes. Doniphan's mill continued operating until its destruction by fire on May 17th 1924; it was quickly replaced by newly built First National Bank building no. 2 on current site that began operations September 1st 1925 under new management from Jules Steinmetz Sr.; this bank continues operations today as HSBC USA Incorporated.. A significant event that took place within downtown Atsacado occurred on October 3rd 1906 when skirmishes between two groups opposing annexation into Fresno by Los Angeles began which turned violent leading to the deaths of five individuals - three Californians who had been working for Peralta Bros., copper miners employed by Sperry & Myers Copper Mines Ltd., Alfred Bean (a Native American) working for Gold Fields Exploration Co., Edward Krantz who had been hired to lead an expedition surveying potential mine sites near Isabella northward along beach frontage owned by Mrs Arthur Fenton - all died due to gunshot wounds suffered while trying unsuccessfully to cross streams bedded between hills just east side Main Street/Alameda Avenue towards coast just south side Of store front where large 4 story building now stands

The population of Atascadero increased rapidly during the mid-19th century due to immigration from Mexico and other parts of Latin America. By 1910, Atascadero had over 10,000 residents. During World War II,Atascadero served as a munitions dump for San Diego County. In 1954, AtascadEROde became an unincorporated community within San Diego County when it withdrew from county government. In 1973, it rejoined the municipality after becoming rezoned for residential use and being given city status by voters. Today,Atascaderos boasts many upscale businesses and is home to several colleges and universities including UC Santa Barbara and UCSD School of Medicine
