Atascadero is a small town located in San Luis Obispo County, California. The population was 8,844 at the 2010 census. Atascadero is home to the University of California, Santa Cruz and the Atascadero Martinez Marine Park. The town was founded by Spanish colonists in 1795 and named after an Atascadero creek. The first post office opened in 1836 and the first store in 1861. In 1924, AtascadERO passed through a reformation which made it one of only six townships in San Luis Obispo County without a school board or mayor. The history of Atascadero begins with Mission San Fernando de Asís established on April 1, 1795 by Father José de la Costa y Valdivia as part of Rancho Los Algodones towards what would become downtown Paso Robles. After two years, the mission was abandoned due to lack of supplies and converts within its walls; however, Father José's successor Father Francisco Sanchez continued building until his death on October 25th, 1800 from yellow fever contracted while tending cattle near present day Paso Robles. It would be another three years before any progress had been made with regards to development for this new settlement at the junction of two creeks called Laguna Negro and Laguna Blanca due to objections from some who felt that such an outpost should be located closer to Monterey Bay. By 1803 there were around 20 families resident in what is today known asMission San Fernando de Asís vecino (present day Atascador). Father José's successors including Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla began purchasing land eastward along both creeks for farming purposes but no buildings were erected until 1807 when Don Manuel Nieto acquired 640 acres east of Mission San Fernando de Asís along with title to alluvial soil underlying several miles worth of Creek beds forming present day Atascador Township Limits extending northeastward into Monterey County past present-day Half Moon Bay where they met up with Mexican military captain Antonio Lopez who had also discovered gold fields near modern-day Isla Vista north of Point Convent while exploring inland waters between Point Lobos and El Sobrante Isles during a trip across these coasts late August/September 1797; thenceforth under Mexican jurisdiction mining operations commenced on large scale immediately adjoining Santa Barbara Mountains soon thereafter culminating at Anza Hill about 2 ½ miles southeast then northwestwardly (now known as Guell Street) following mineralized watercourses underground discontinuously southwesterly (now known as Rincon Road) now Main Street thence southwestwesterlyN/A via Rincon Road direct thereto originally said Anza Hill about 24 Mls WSW from Presidio thenNWTOWARDSSANTA BARBARA MOUNTAINS Via Estrada RealRoad Abandoned priorto1900 AD follow Mineralized Watercourses Underground Deepened & properties enlarged thereby making atasca adobe dwellings beginning in early 19th century more numerous than ever before thus giving rise to later appellations like "AtASCADERO VALLEY" or "THE GOLDEN AGE OF ATASCADERO". Downtown Atascador actually predates most if not all structures still standing within its boundaries today! Some believe that even some structures built subsequent thereto might date back even further! What we do know however is that downtown finally became completed circa 1900 thanks largely to efforts spearheaded by local volunteers - many among whom are still alive and well today! There are countless stories associated with downtown’s genesis – tales that range from thrilling escapades enjoyed during Pioneer Day parades throughouttown every year; To how hard working Main Street merchants always endeavored “to keep pace withe times”; How festive Fourth Of July get-togethers often featured live music performances by local bandshell players right outside city limits just so everyone could enjoy being close enough for everything but far enough away never again experiencing those pesky weather conditions which seem like they can make ANYTHING go wrong?! The name Atascadero originated from the Spanish word "atasca" which means "to chop down." In 1865, Rancho Atascadero de los Pinos was sold to James W. Marsh and his partners for $2,500. The Marsh family continued to own it until 1911 when it was sold to Dr. George Sutter who leased it back to the Marsh family for 99 years until their death in 1969. In 1971, the City of San Luis Obispo annexed the Town of Atascaderos and renamed it Atascadero City Limits.
