Atascadero, California is a small town located in San Luis Obispo County, California. It was founded in 1853 by the Spanish as part of Rancho Atascadero. The population of Atascadero today is about 15,000 people and it is the county seat of San Luis Obispo County. The townsite at what is now Atascadero was first settled by Spanish Californians in the late 18th century. In 1800, José Antonio Vargas organized a party from Los Angeles to explore the goldfields of Northern California. They were followed by more Spaniards and Mexican nationals who began to settle at Atascadero after finding out about gold near there. A post office called Atascadero was established in 1853, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1912. The first store opened at what is now Main Street in 1865. In 1888, Oscar Wilde married Maud Gonne at Sacred Heart Cathedral here while living in nearby Paso Robles; they later moved back to AtascadERO where he died two years later on July 29th 1892 after a long and successful writing career that spanned five decades

Atascadero has been a center for citrus culture since 1849 when its first postmaster, John Ahern, received his mail from ranchers on Mission Bayou. It's also home to Rancho Atascadero National Monument which encompasses 381 acres (150 hectares) of rolling hills and waterways stretching from north to south and east to west. The town began as two small hamlets: Atascadero Creek and Atascadero Heights. The name "Atascadero" means "place where oranges grow." In 1848 José Francisco de Anza discovered gold near today's junction of U.S.-Rancho Reyes Road and Rio Seco Boulevard; this discovery led to extensive land speculation in what would become Atascaderos vicinity. Goldmining started soon afterwards, but because it was an outlaw country no one could get rich mining it until General Antonio López de Santa Anna came into power in 1857 and established military rule which discouraged such activity By 1870 about 500 people lived in what is now AtascadERO In 1896 voters approved Proposition 165 which granted township status to all unincorporated areas within Kern County with a population over 1,000 prior to this they had been considered part of San Joaquin Valley townships
In 1847, Atascadero became part of the Mexican Republic. In 1848, Mexico lost the war with United States and Atascadero became part of California. The first white person to live in Atascadero was William Shafter, who came overland from New York in 1850.
