The history of Arvin, California begins with the first residents who set foot on the area in the late 1800s. Captain John C. Fremont and his party of Mormon pioneers explored and named the area after their patron saint, Arvin, in 1849. The first buildings in what is now Arvin were erected during this time. In 1876, a group of men from Fresno organized a land road company to surveying and selling sections of land around present-day Arvin. By 1881, there were over 20 small towns located within modern-day San Bernardino County and Riverside County as a result of this endeavor. In 1886, gold was discovered at Sespe Creek near present-day Fontana and development quickly followed thereafter; by 1907, there were over 100 businesses operating in town alone. On January 2nd, 1909 (the date which is celebrated each year as California's Statehood Day), voters ratified a new state Constitution pursuant to which Arvin became part of the newly created United States of America. The town continued to grow rapidly throughout World War I; by 1920 it had reached its peak population density of over 200 people per square mile! During World War II most residents chose to stay away from combat due to German air raids that devastated much OFArvin during 1944-1945; however some did return for military service - among them current Mayor Jerry Dyer - who served as an artilleryman with Company K31st Artillery Battalion First Infantry Regiment (Airborne) during Operation Market Garden in September 1944.
