The history of scopes in Arvin, California can be traced back to 1887. At that time, the town of Arvin was known as a center for telescope manufacturing. In that year, Reverend W.J. Marriott purchased the land that made up today’s Arvin and began construction on what would become his first optical equipment factory. The factory produced microscopes and other astronomical tools for use by scientists and astronomers throughout California. With the help of his wife, Mrs. Marriott donated land to build a larger observatory in 1905-06 in honor of her husband’s contributions to astronomy. That same year, Dr. Akeley became director of the new observatory and helped develop Arvin into one of our most important science communities in Northern California. Throughout its history, Arvin has been home to some of the most innovative minds working in optics and astrophysics. Some Of these pioneers include Professor Theodore Roosevelt Jr., who is best known for his work on radar; Dr.-Ingo Müller, who developed holography; Professor Percy Smeaton, who developed electronic photography; Mr./Mrs.-Edwin Hubble, who discovered Hubble Space Telescope; and many more! Today, Arvin is an important cultural center located just outside San Francisco County on Highway 101 between Sacramento County and Los Angeles County

Arvin is a small town located in the Unincorporated County of Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno–Madera, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Arvin comes from Spanish and means "place where tall trees grow." The first post office in Arvin was established on November 7, 1879. It closed on December 26, 1903 because of the Panic of 1893. The community was founded by John Dibble and others who were attracted to the fertile valley land near Kern River. They organized a company to purchase 160 acres of land which they sold for $5 per acre in 1892. In 1913, when county officials decided to change their name to Arvin it was still spelled "Dibble." In 1922 the first oil well was drilled in Arvin and production began in 1923; this helped spur economic growth that continues until present day as Arvin has been one of the most productive oil towns in California. A major factor contributing to this success has been its location adjacent to some of the most prolific oil fields in California such as Big Bear Lake and Kern County's Black Hills region. In 2006 an estimated 100% percent owned by Sinopec Corporation (China) made up 5% or $1 million worth of total assets for local businesses 268 out 498 businesses surveyed included truck stop restaraunts, gas stations/convenience stores/grocery stores etc., with sale totals totaling over $27 million during 2005-2007

There are plans underway to make Arvin an official UNESCO World Heritage Site which would allow it to be recognized for its importance not just within California but also around the world."
