The Ohlone were one of several Native American groups who lived along this stretch of coast before European colonization arrived in search for new land to rancho or explore after becoming lost during their journey across North America. The first Europeans to come through these areas were Spanish soldiers who sacked Mission San Francisco de Asís (now Silicon Valley) on July 26, 1769. This event marked the beginning of Mexican control over Californias north-central region including what is now San Bernardino County and portions of Riverside County today including both Los Angeles and Orange Counties east thereof; as well as much extending eastward into Sonoma County beyond Alamo Heights (the site today occupied by Pasadena).
