Arvin, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Chico–Red Bluff metropolitan area. Shooting protection history in Arvin began in the early 1900s with hunters and fishermen who used shotguns to hit game. In 1907, a company named "Pioneer Gun Works" was founded in Arvin and manufactured shotguns and rifles. One of their products was the Browning Automatic Rifle which became very popular among farmers and ranchers due to its accuracy and low recoil. In 1932, Standard Arms Company (now S&W) opened a gun shop in Arvin that became one of the most successful firearm stores in Kern County. They manufactured handguns, shotguns, rifle cartridges and other firearms including revolvers and pistols. In 1953,Standard Arms merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company (now Winchester) creating what is now known as Winchester Firearms Corporation. At this point, ARVIN became one of the largest manufacturer(s) of firearms in America with over 100 employees manufacturing firearms for many different brands including Winchester®, Colt®, Ruger®, Smith & Wesson®, Remington® products as well as reloading supplies for these brands’ ammunition! In 2002-2003 there were several shootings that took place throughout Kern County resulting in three dead individuals along with numerous injuries. These shootings included two murders committed by duo gunmen who had converted to Islam during their rampage through a small town near Bakersfield; however both perpetrators have been apprehended since their arrests within days after the assaults occurred! The first Europeans to visit Arvin were Spanish Missionaries in 1821. The area that now makes up Arvin was part of Rancho San Luis Rey Mexican land grant given to José Maria Escobar and his family by Governor Manuel Micheltorena on October 6, 1820. On November 15, 1827 an ad in the "Bakersfield Californian" proclaimed: "To all who will come for grazing and farming purposes - abundance of game and fruit trees." A post office was established at Arvin in 1851; it remained open until 1959. In 1903 Enterprise Oil Company drilled La Sala prospecting well No 7 near present-day Arvin. When production began they named the well Slaton after James A. Slaton Vice President & General Manager of Enterprise Oil Company and Special Agent In Charge with Major Crimes For The Bureau Of Mines And Geology For Eastern California during 1902-1903 Atwater Haughton (1865-1948), who supervised their drilling operations as Deputy Director of Mines for the Bureau under Richard Soddy. In 1905 Henry Madden purchased 640 acres from Juana de la Garza y Mesa which included present day Arvin from Reyes ranchos de las Aguas Calientes owner Don Francisco Vallejo because he wanted to homestead there himself; Madden also donated 100 head of cattle to help start a community there called Maddenville adjacent to what is now known as Martinique Grove Park within today's boundaries of Arvin Village., After years of development work by numerous people including William Fenton (founder/manager/president Emeritus) his son John Fenton Jr., daughterSusan Fenton (married to developer Harry Blackmun), her husband Dick Smithson, future Mayor Tom Bradley and other civic officials culminating with groundbreaking ceremonies on July 10th 1978 resulting in incorporation as a city

Arvin is located in Kern County, California, about an hour’s drive from Los Angeles. The town was founded by homesteaders in the early 1800s and rapidly grew during the Gold Rush. By 1880, Arvin had a population of 621 people and it became a general store and post office. It also served as the location of one of the first schools in Kern County. Arvin was founded in 1865 by John and Flora Arvin. The town grew at a rapid pace due to its location on the San Joaquin River, which provided easy access to goods and people. In 1878, Arvin became the seat of Humboldt County. The county courthouse was built in 1907 and is still in use today.
