Arvin is a small town in Kern County, California, located about 20 miles east of Bakersfield. The first post office at Arvin was established on December 9, 1851. The community was named after Arvin & Company of the same name which operated a stagecoach stop in the area. The original settlers were people from Mount Whitney and other nearby valleys who came to the area during the Gold Rush. In 1875, George Ewing founded what is now known as First National Bank of Arvin with $5,000 he had mined in the area. By 1915, there were 16 businesses in Arvin with an employment total of 511 people. In 1916 local resident J P Snively organized a football team which played against Bakersfield High School for the first time that season. After winning that game 12-0, they played again six months later but lost 7-3 to BHS
The town of Arvin, California was founded in 1853 by J.D. Richardson and his wife, Mary E. Richardson. The first post office operated in the town on May 6, 1853. In 1871, the town was renamed to honor Arvin's first settler and namesake, James Dolan Arvin. The current name of the town is based off of its location on a branch of State Route 66 about halfway between Los Angeles and San Bernardino County
