After World War I ended with Armistice Day (11 November 1918), things quickly changed for Arvin as many residents left for various jobs opportunities elsewhere within the war-torn country or returned home after hostilities had ended. Businesses reopened soon after; however, economic conditions during those postwar years led to a decline over ensuing decades as ranching became more common and joblessness increased due to both industry changes around Reno as well as general economic recession throughout much of America during that time period
Arvin was founded in 1887 as a small town in Kern County, California. It became a city in 1903 and then an incorporated town in 1907. The population of Arvin peaked at 15,000 in 1920, but declined to 10,000 by 1940. The city's decline began after World War II and the area was hit hard by the economic recession of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Arvin experienced its largest growth during the 1990s due to new development around the city limits and from annexation of neighboring towns. As of 2019, Arvin had a population of 25,691.
