In 1906, it had a population of 5,000. In 1909-1910, Arvin became home to the first oil refinery in Kern County. The refinery produced gasoline and other related products for local markets. It closed down in 1923. On November 3rd, 1914, during World War I (WW1), General John J Pershing transferred Ulysses S Grant's remains from Mount Rushmore National Monument to Arvin for burial with military honors at Arlington Cemetery near San Francisco Bay Area city limits after he died in combat at Chaparral Heights on March 14th that year while leading First Brigade (4th Cavalry) Regiment 8th Cavalry US Army Infantry during the Mexican Border Campaign known as “The Great Western War”
