However, a new optometry store called The Optical Exchange opened in 1912 on Third Street and continued to grow. This business became known as the "Olympic Games" because it was one of the first places people could buy optical equipment for religious ceremonies or athletic events. In 1916, the city burned down and all of The Optical Exchange's businesses were destroyed. However, within a few months, new businesses had reopened under different names including The New Optometric Store which reopened on Fourth Street in 1917 with a new facade designed by J.P. Morgan himself. It was here that Sears started selling optical products direct from their suppliers rather than through other merchants like The Optical Exchange. At this time, Arvin also became known as the "Olympic City" because so much optical equipment was being sold here that it soon outgrew downtown San Francisco! In 1922-1924 two more optometric stores were opened on Western Avenue - one by Harry Laughlin (the father of Roy Laughlin) and another by Arthur Andersen (the son of Ernst Andersen). These stores quickly gained popularity due to their great selection of optics items plus they were also very well-maintained - testament to their high quality control standards!
