The Arvin Valley was first settled in 1847 byuvans. The area was designated as the county seat of Kern County in 1851, and became a part of Los Angeles County in 1853. In 1912, Arvin was renamed to honor General George C. Marshall who served as secretary of defense during World War I. The population of Arvin reached 100,000 by 1921 and peaked at over 200,000 in 1938. However, because of the Great Depression, the population declined rapidly from 1938 to 1946. The decline could be accounted for by a variety of reasons including a decrease in agricultural activity and an increase in industry which caused the town’s economy to rely on services instead of agriculture. In 1949, Arvin was annexed into Imperial County and then again into Kern County in 1955 when it lost its status as county seat due to the addition of San Bernardino County. The population decreased once again until it reached its lowest level at 10,000 within two years following the merger with Tulare County. However, due to economic development within the new county boundaries, Arvin has regained some populations since then and is currently around 20,000 residents with a strong focus on education and technology businesses. Arvin is a city in southern Kern County, California, United States. The population was 18,574 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside–San Bernardino–Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Arvin was Manuel Nieto on May 22, 1871. He and his family moved from El Centro to Arvin after Mexican President Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered the deportation of Californios who were living without proper papers. The discovery of oil in Kern County in 1909 led to increased production and development within the area around Arvin; meanwhile, services such as schools and Detective Bureau Activity continued to be provided by nearby Isleton until 1944 when it became its own town. In 1942, during World War II, Arvin also served as an airbase for the United States Army Air Forces Ninth Air Force Flying Fortress Wing known as "The Red Baron" because of Major Edward "Eddy" Beattie's victory over Nazi Germany's ace fighter pilot Wolfgang Messerschmidt at San Jacinto Airport on February 17th off Bakersfield Seaplane Base () just outside of town limits (). After the war ended on September 2nd 1945 local residents rejoiced when USAAF Station Elmira was activated adjacent to then-Township Road 362 east of town center (). festooned with Victory Medals (and later still) from combat flying campaigns over Europe (), this new USAF station would become one of the largest employer(s) in town with a staff totaling more than 100! Today much remains unchanged from wartime days including main arterial streets such as Elmira Avenue., Railroad Street., Main Street., Community Boulevard., Pico Boulevard./Upper Pico Boulevard., Cottonwood Drive./Lower Cottonwood Drive.–overlooking downtown’s central square where once stood a post office/temporary jail/fire hall/meeting place for elected officials (later renamed courthouse), school district administration building housing both elementary and high school students along with annexes that are home toArvin Unified School District Administration Building No. 3 & 4 which have been here since 1957; “Cottonwood Place” annexed by neighboring unincorporated community (); while most businesses have closed or relocated since then many notable places like High Desert Lutheran Church & Cemetery (), Veterans Memorial Park (), First Baptist Church (now A Better Future Christian Chapel), Presbyterian church (& other denominations), adult day care center (), various churches affiliated with PCLTV NETWORKS congregations located throughout unincorporated community including Our Lady Of The Angels Catholic Parish (founded 1986) -all before present day 1997 when township boundaries changed again making Arvin Township Incorporate()

Arvin, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California that was founded in 1875. The name Arvin comes from the Spanish word "Arava" meaning "little stream." The town was originally called Redding and then Eureka before it was renamed Arvin. The townsite was platted in 1875 by James W. Murphy and others under the name of John Day's Rancho San Miguel de Arvin. In 1886, the area became part of what would become Fresno County. The population of Arvin peaked at 1,500 in 1924 when many farmers moved to the area because of new irrigation water available from Felton Dam on the Santa Clara River. By 1950, however, most residents had left for various reasons including high prices for food and air quality problems caused by mining operations nearby. The first post office opened in Arvin on November 15, 1876; it closed on March 13, 1907. A school started in 1877 but it burned down in 1888. A new school started up again in 1896 but it also burned down soon afterward. In 1916, a branchline railroad was built between Eureka and Scranton which connected with other railroads near Fresno County to bring goods into and out of Arvin over a distance of about 150 miles (240 km). The last mill closed down around 1930 although there are references to an earlier mill being located here as early as 1868; this mill produced flour for local markets until 1906 when all mills were shuttered due to increased competition from more modern mills near Fresno City (Fresno County) and Madera (Madera County). Some evidence suggests that a flourmill may have been located at some point south of present day Arvin on Unincorporated territory east of Highway 99 known as Springdale Butte Creek National Monument which is now within Yosemite National Park boundary according to USGS Geographic Names Information System data . There is no current evidence confirming or denying this claim though further research may be necessary if such an allegation is true.. On October 15th 1928 one old postcard showed up at an auction house selling stamps honoring people associated with earlyArvins like James W Murphy who donated land lot #1 & 2 across street from future Fair Oaks Mall
Arvin was founded in 1864 as a small farming community on the banks of the Sacramento River.
