Arvin, California is a city in Kern County, California, United States. It was incorporated on December 3, 1892. The population was 21,992 at the 2010 census. The Arvin Business District is named after the city and its business district. The first permanent settlement in the area now known as Arvin was made by prospectors John Sutter and his brother Charles on November 8, 1848. They discovered rich mineral rights near present-day Arvin and built a cabin there tocontinue looking for gold. The first post office in the area was established at Cedar Grove on February 14, 1850. On January 10, 1865, Mexican soldiers burned down part of the stockade that had been constructed around Fort Tejon to free 25 American prisoners who had been held there since 1863. This event became known as "The Day of Infamy". After that day most American settlers avoided areas around where Mexican troops were stationed because of fear of such an attack again happening or else being caught up in it themselves should they attempt to leave their posts unguarded. In 1867 Wm Hite platted what is now downtown Arvin and laid out streets with cannons shooting from each corner into San Gabriel Valley beyond; this vista seems still observable today from some windows along Main Street between 2nd and 3rd Streets east of City Hall Plaza! He also donated land for what would become modern day Kern County Courthouse Square! This new town quickly grew due to many new arrivals including Methodists (1868), Baptists (1869), LDS Tabernacle Baptist Church (January 6th 1870) – all under one roof until May 27th 1870 when services were moved outdoors due to extreme weather conditions caused by an earthquake about 40 miles away! In those days everything happened fast so nothing much changed until 1886 when agriculture replaced mining as the primary focus giving rise to two businesses districts both centered around First St/Eagle Rock Ave: Downtown/Downtown East which includes most of present day downtown core; Midtown which includes parts of Present Day Highland Park off Eagle Rock Ave., parts of Highland Park off Interstate 5 north side(west side only currently used for parking lot), plus lots behind Gurdwara Temple eastbound I-5 exit #314 & westbound I-5 entrance ramp have always been occupied by stores located inside buildings rather than outside like today
