The first post office in Arvin was established in 1858. A store and blacksmith shop were built soon after and a school was built in 1860. By 1870, there were eight residents living in Arvin. The first storekeeper, Wm Fenton, opened his business in 1871. In 1875, when Arvin became part of that year’s state capital city, it had a population of 10 people; by 1880 it had increased to 21 with three stores and two saloons. In 1886-1887 an agricultural fair was held at Arvin which attracted attention from farmers throughout California because it featured demonstrations of haying, fruits (appleseed), vegetables (carrots, potatoes etc.), poultry (hen) eggs and other items not typically available from marketplaces elsewhere at that time. In 1901-1902 an electric light switch was installed here as part of what is now known as “Operation Switched On” history – one day earlier than similar events taking place across America due to Edison’s invention during his longitudinaldemonstration campaign through Northern California over several months starting on October 14th (the namesake day for this particular event). A general store opened here in 1911 which included self-service meatmarkets until it closed 1959; gift shops also operated intermittently until 1959 along with Stonington Baking Co., later acquired by Premier Bakehouse Incorporated grocery chain operations commenced beginning 1962 with 2 operating buildings including presently vacant former bakery lot - these businesses continued into current days as "Premier Bakehouse" convenience stores open adjacent to larger Safeway supermarket chain operations begun 1967! The last post office operation closed 1963 with only 7 inhabitants living here then too annexed by newer Rancho Cordova development becoming independent City Of Sacramento

The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location on the San Joaquin River, and it became an important transit stop for travelers between Sacramento and the north. The Arvin post office closed in 1912, but the town continued to grow until it reached its current population of around 9,000 people in 2000. The most famous resident of Arvin was Charles Manson. He lived there from 1974-77 when he was charged with killing seven people at aranch called Spahn Ranch near Lodi. Manson is best known for his role as leader of the white supremacists who committed these murders.
Arvin is located in Stanislaus County, California. The name was bestowed on the town by General John C. Fremont in 1849 when he named it after his young son Arvin.
