Arvin is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The Arvin post office was established in 1879, and remains in operation. The population was 2,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Joaquin Valley region. The town started as an agricultural community on the south bank of the Kern River near its confluence with the river's larger tributary, Bakersfield. A sawmill and grist mill were built there in 1881 by Wm. Halsey & Sons and operated until 1902; they were replaced by a improved sawmill and grist mill designed by George Eames that became Arvin's first commercial establishment. A schoolhouse was built in 1886 by Mrs. Cushing for students of District No. 7 (later known as Kern County) School Districts 1-9; it continued to be used as a school until 1906 when it became a private residence and was sold to Mr. Fenton of Arvin for $2,000 (). The first post office at Arvin opened on December 12, 1879; it served local residents only because there was no mail service available between Bakersfield and Arvin at that time (). The current post office building was constructed in 1957 on Main Street adjacent to First Baptist Church (). It is now used as a library/cafeteria combination.. In 1915 John Sutter founded what would become Sutter Foods company here (); his son Don found success expanding into other agricultural businesses here including ranches and orchards.. In 1962 the townsite area east of US 101was annexed by Bakersfield.; after years of planning and fundraising from various interests including the City Councilmember who represented downtown Bakersfield during this time period (), construction began on what would become Interstate 5 bypassing Arvin completely within one mile () making it easier for commuters travelling northbound or southbound along I-5 to accessArvin without having to detour through Bakersfield
