The first store opened in 1896 and continued to operate until it burned down in 1912. Arvin is a small town in Siskiyou County, California, located about an hour's drive north of Sacramento. The population was 5,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sacramento–San Joaquin Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent inhabitant of Arvin was Jedediah Smith in 1824. He prospected for minerals and land in the area today known as Siskiyou National Forest. In 1864, Arvin voters approved creating a township with Wofford as its first mayor. The name honor General George Armstrong Custer who fought at Washita River Bridge during the American Civil War (1865). In 1912, Arvin became one of the early towns to be served by the newly created Mono County; it still serves that purpose today. On July 16, 1934, an earthquake magnitude 6.9 struck the region and caused extensive damage to homes and businesses; however no human fatalities occurred. On October 14, 1906, local rancher John "Tom" Brown patented 838 acres (291 hectares) of what would become Arvin Township; it included parts of present-day Siskiyou and Mono counties. Brown had been driving his horse team across a desert ridge when he discovered gold deposits on November 3rd near Neeley Lakes east of where he lived - this discovery led to his nickname "Gilded Age Goldbug". By 1907 gold fever had reached Arvin and many people arrived from outlying areas to claim property or stake claims while others worked shovels over panning operations in nearby hillsides throughout December and January 1907 yielding little more than gravel and dirt . Thereafter only sporadic mining took place until new vein discoveries were made northeastward along what is now US Highway 101 from spring 2006 until present day . The opening day for registered applicants was Saturday Apr 1st 1959 but because there was so much activity prior to that date no full list can be found online however most believe around May 15th because someuvial dross deposition started piling up on creek banks south side old post office & other buildings site soon after application opened
