Artesia, California is a small town in the Kern County area of southern California. The population was 7,527 at the 2010 census. It is located about east-northeast of Bakersfield and west of Salinas. The first Europeans to visit Artesia were Missionaries Hidalgo and de Anza on September 21, 1776. They named the place San Antonio after St Anthony of Padua who had been martyred there in 1198. The most important early resident was George Catherwood who arrived in 1853 and operated an adobe ranch until his death in 1887. His son James Waugh Catherwood became one of the largest landowners in Artesia with holdings that included parts of present-day Mundelein and Arvin townships (now part of Nevada City). In 1902, Mexican immigrants founded a mission here called Our Lady Of La Union which remains active today as a church society. In 1915, John Sayer Goodwin purchased 5 acres southwest of the mission for use as a public school campus; he named it Artesia High School to honor his hometown where he had spent much time as a child. Goodwin served as its first superintendent from 1915 until his death in 1957. In 1951, the school district moved to new facilities adjacent to Artesia High School before merging with nearby Bakersfield Unified School District in 1984 to form Kern County's largest school district by enrollment (then numbering over 100 schools). A large number of people have settled here during this time including many artists whose work can be seen throughout town today including Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and William Saroyan among others

Artesia is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 5,067 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Madera, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Artesia were the Ohlone. They arrived from southern California around AD 1000. The Ohlone lived near what is now downtown Artesia and hunted deer and other game in their territory. When white men first came to the area in 1851, they encountered the Ohlones and killed them for food. In 1856, Captain George Custer led an expedition through Kern County on his way to Santa Fe. He stopped at Artesian Creek near present-day Artesia for water and supplies before continuing on his way. One of his troopers named John Sutter founded Sutterville here in 1857 after landing at Yuma Ranch on Feb 14th of that year with Lt Col Jesse Wethersbeck's 1st Battalion California Volunteers under General Ulysses S Grant inspecting new roads across Central California. In 1863, when Mexican troops overran Northern California during the American Civil War (1861-1865), many squatters living along rivers like January Lakeand San Joaquin River decided to move into this newly opened land which they gradually claimed as their own byuiti or homesteaders who had illegally acquired it from Mexico without proper title or compensation... Aftermath of Mexican occupation: 1865marked end of status quo ante Mexican forces; settlers began claimin property rights A surveyor’s checkerboard map dated 1889 depicted original 23 adjoind lots forming community today including parts of Old Pasadena and Rocklin annexed between 1886-87 southward extending eastward beyond current boundaries served by Pasadena public Schools until annexation by Bakersfield School District circa 1991..
