Artesia is a small town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 6,091 at the 2010 census. It is located on the north shore of San Francisco Bay. The name Artesia comes from the Spanish word "arte" meaning "skill", "hard work", and "cia" meaning "the place where trees are found." The first settler in what is now Artesia was José de la Garza who arrived in 1838. In 1849, Antonio Asencio settled here and named it after himself - Artesia being hispanicized form of Anthony as well as an honorific given to him by General José Castro y Montoya for services rendered during the Mexican-American War. In 1856, John Sutter established a ranch here which he called Sutter's Campground and later moved it to Rancho El Sobrante east of town. In 1865, Captain George Cramon purchased land south of town from Don Carlos Gutierrez and opened what became known as the Comstock Lode mine; this area would become one of the most important gold mines in California. During World War II, many American servicemen were sent to Camp Pendleton (present day Irvine) in nearby Santa Clara County for training before being sent back home; many who ended up living and working here married local women or enlisted locally. Afterward much of this area reverted to agricultural use with few permanent residents remaining until the late 1960s when it began to be developed into a bedroom community for Northern Californians seeking easy access to Silicon Valley jobs. A fire destroyed much of downtown Artesia on February 15, 1984; though no one was killed or injured there was significant damage done both inside and outside city limits including major chunks out of businesses within blocks radius around downtown including several banks that remain closed today as a result artesian water doesn't reach them withoutmpathy! Since then various redevelopment efforts have taken place such as Arts District which opened up portions near old hotels/motels along with new public square/parking lot areas etc., but with little success other than adding more high rise condos overlooking downtown Chowchilla Valley .....and fewer people visiting Downtown since 4th Street dead ends at fault line between 2 neighborhoods
