It lies on the east side of the San Joaquin Valley and is about 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Bakersfield. The town was founded in 1887 by Spanish-Americans who had come toranch in Tulare County from central Mexico City. They named it after their patron saint, St. Anthony of Padua. The first post office opened in 1888 and the first school year was 1889–90. Artesia became an incorporated community in 1911. The oil fields around Kern County were discovered during World War II and production began immediately; Artesia became one of the most important industrial areas within its borders as a result. However, since then oil production has declined and now Artesia primarily functions as a bedroom community for people working in Kern County’s larger cities or elsewhere nearby. Today Artesia contains some notable landmarks: 1) The old courthouse which burned down on October 11th, 1922; 2) The First Unitarian Church which was built in 1907; 3) The Freeman Schoolhouse which served grades K-12 from 1892 until 1969; 4) Cottonwood Canyon Preserve which contains many rare plants and trees that have not been found anywhere else before; 5) Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with its original stained glass windows dating back to 1886; 6) And finally Anthony’s Chapel which replaced the original church building that burned down in 1922

Artesia is a small town located in the Mojave Desert near Joshua Tree National Park. The area around Artesia was first settled by the Mono people during the late 18th century. In 1851, General George Armstrong Custer and his army were attacking the Mexican garrison at Gila Bend when they met a group of Mono women who had fled to Artesia from nearby California City. After witnessing Custer's victory at Gila Bend, these women decided to stay and start a new life in what would become Artesia. The community of Artesia slowly grew over the next few decades as more settlers arrived to build homes and businesses around the small town. By 1930, Artesia had a population of about 350 people. During World War II, many local boys served in the US military and brought their families back to Artesia for wartime stays. After the war ended, many of the original residents moved away or died in various accidents or natural disasters that occurred in California during that time period. In 1990, Artesianans voted to incorporate into Los Angeles County as part of Eastern Riverside County. The incorporation marked an important milestone for bothArtesianan communities and county government; it was only then that services such as education and health care became available within their boundaries. Today, there are still some residents who live within Artsian borders but maintain close ties with neighboring communities due to common interests (e.g., hiking).
