Artesia is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 21,691 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kern County and home to the University of Southern California (USC). The name "Artesia" comes from the Mexican word "artesan" which means " maker or sculptor." The first European to visit Artesia was José Gabriel Moraga on July 24, 1769 while exploring Rancho San Bernardino de Anza from Stockton on the Sacramento River. He named it after his patron Saint Anthony of Padua. The settlement at Artesia grew quickly due to its strategic location as a crossroads for travelers and traders coming down the Milk Road and Old Spanish Trail. By 1847, there were over 100 residents living in Artesia. One merchant who operated a general store in what is now downtown Artesia founded what would become known as The Farmers Trust Company which remains an important part of local economy today. In 1851, Cecil Goodyear built Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company on land that now includes much of downtown Artesia.goodyear continues to be headquartered here today with their corporate headquarters across The Avenue from City Hall

Artesia, California is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 7,824 at the 2010 census. The name of the city comes from Spanish for "alley of trees". The first post office in Artesia was established on December 12, 1887. It served the community of Artesian Wells until 1912. In 1907, the town of Artesian Wells began to be annexed by Artesia and became part of that city's municipal limits. In 1916, the City Council voted to rename the town Artsian Wells after Willis Hockaday who had been mayor of Fresno at that time. In 1951, Artesan Wells incorporated as a city under Chapter 675 (the Cities and Towns Law). On November 3rd of that year it passed an ordinance establishing a spending limit for developers in its boundaries which would remain effective until relieved by voters or repealed by statute; this ordinance remains in effect today. In 1984, when Measure C was submitted to proposition 2244 (the Proposition K campaign issue), artesan wells proposed annexing its eastern border with Visalia so as not to become an enclave within their own municipality but lost to that proposal 4-3 due to lack of support from within their own government
The first residents in Artesia were the Chumash people, who arrived in 1769. The town was founded by Captain Benjamin Folsom and his party of men while they were on their way to find a new home. They named the town after General Manuel Armijo, who had helped them escape from Mexico. The first post office was established in 1857, and the first store opened in 1865. In 1886, Artesia became a city.
