It is located on the Porter Ranch/Pasadena border and surrounds the community of Artesia. The name Artesia comes from "Areta", meaning "plain" or "estate". The first Europeans to visit what is now Artesia were Spanish soldiers who explored the area in 1795 while on their way to battle San Francisco. They named a small village after General José de Avila y Cámpora which they found east of San GabrielMission Ridge. In 1835, Mexican Californians founded an agricultural settlement called Villa Rica de las Aguas (later known as Pasadena), about north of Artesia. In 1851, John Sutter built Sutter's Station on nearby Mount Wilson overlooking Los Angeles County and opened it to settlers. In 1856, he sold land to Jotham Ralston for $5 per acre and chose the name Pasadena because it was one mile wide at its widest point and had no hills or valleys like other rancho areas in Southern California then. Artesia is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 5,821 at the 2010 census. It is located on the edge of the Mojave Desert and neighboring communities include Needles and Joshua Tree National Park. The community was founded in 1911 by John Fitch and his son-in-law Harry Humes as an agricultural center for cattle drives into nearby Yosemite Valley. By 1916 Artesia had become a small town with its own post office, school and telephone service. In 1951 it became part of the larger city of Salinas when that town was established within Kern County. The Artesia School District includes one high school, four middle schools and six elementary schools. The district's website says that "the mission of Artesia School District is to provide quality education for all students who need it." The first public building in Artesia was a log cabin belonging to James Wickersham which he built himself around 1907. A cotton gin was built in 1909 by Jens Larsen but it burned down within months. A new cotton gin was constructed by George Pyle in 1912 and named after him after it caught fire several times during its construction. A hardware store opened in 1913 by C R Johnson which closed two years later due to financial difficulties caused by World War I munitions production quotas imposed by the American government. A bank opened account with First National Bank of Salinas in 1923 which continues to be operational today as First California Bank & Trust Company (FCBT). During prohibition there were many speakeasies such as Charlie's Angels Lounge near where Interstate 10 crosses the desert from Nevada into Kern County - this area now houses Phillips 66 gas stations. In 1931 artesian well drilling began operations underground at what is now known as Well No 9; this well Drilling Division discovered oil reserves inside residential areas adjacent to Artesian wells beginning about 1933 until 1935 when production ceased because of overproduction caused by innovations brought about about by WWII technology developments like hydraulic fracturing (fracking). Prior to Prohibition most artesian wells were drilled through surface rocks so these discoveries did not result in any additional revenue for county coffers until overproduction resumed following repeal of prohibition
The city of Artesia was founded in 1871 by J.P. Morgan and his partners, David Bicknell and George Prentice. The city grew rapidly due to its location on the Carrizo Plains and its access to water resources. In 1907, Artesia became an incorporated city under the name of Los Angeles County.
