It is part of the San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara metropolitan area. The first Europeans tosight Artesia were Antonio José de Urquiza y Pacheco on August 21, 1777 while exploring eastbound from Monterey Bay. They named it after Mexican General Agustín de Orozco who had helped lead the Mexican Campaign of 1768 against British forces in North America. In 1821, Juan Bautista Mora founded what would become known as Rancho del Rey Adobe on what is now Old Artesia Road near present day Highway 101. At this time there were only a few scattered settler families and no roads or trails through the rural area so there was little commerce or industry until after California became statehood in 1850. In 1851–1852 two brothers by the name of Humboldt set out from Mexico City with twenty horse riders under contract to explore and map new land within California for governor Joaquin Miller and other interested parties including Oneida Indians led by Chief Joseph Smith who offered them 10 percent of any land they found. After traveling for more than sixty miles they reached Muir Woods where they stopped for lunch on July 20th, 1851 before continuing their journey northeastward along what is now Utopia Parkway until they came to Mission Peak Preserve which they stopped at on July 24th next to Mission Dolores Chapel which still stands today (it replaced an adobe structure built in 1836). They named their discovery Muir National Park after American naturalist and explorer Nathaniel Culver who inspected it in 1853 during his trip down California's Central Valley region tour that year with Jepson Perry who would later become US Secretary of War under presidents Franklin D Roosevelt and John F Kennedy After reaching Mission Peak Preserve, Humboldt's party continued its journey upslope where they discovered Mount Shasta which he named Mount Whitney following explorer James Hutton whose book A Narrative History of AncientAmerica(1795) mentioned Mount Whitney having been sighted by Spanish conquistadors in 1539 but never explored because it was too high for horses to reach without assistance from dogs or climbing gear In early 1861 when US Army Major George Armstrong Custer attacked Fort Sumner northwest of Sacramento during the American Civil War killing most of its garrison artesian residents quickly organized themselves into Citizens' Militia Company #2 commanded by Captain James Kapp (later Lieutenant Colonel), formed December 1st 1861; also aided by local ranchers Chasen Randall & Jesse Winchester Captain James Kapp quickly organized civilians into Companies A & B January 12th 1862 while commanding elements 2nd Battalion Citizens' Militia Company #1 - Captains Rufus Bolton & Wm Bowen - Lieutenants Charles Eames & Hiram Griggs - Sergt’s Geo Fenton (& John Schieffer) Withdrawing firepower February 1862 due to lack munitions; Companies A&B reorganize March 6th with same officers/managers except sergt’s Geo Fenton (& John Schieffer) headquarters moved from building 2nd battalion HQ back ontoOld Artesia Road
