Artesia, California is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of Northern California. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. It was founded by Mormons in 1849. The town nearly collapsed during the Gold Rush and now relies on farming and ranching to support its economy. The Mormon pioneers arriving in 1849 were looking for new territory to settle after their previous colony of Utah had been destroyed by Mexican forces. They named their new settlement Artesia after Captain José Artemisa who had led an exploratory party southward from Santa Fe, New Mexico Territory in 1846-47. In 1850, the first post office was established here with Alfred Waddell as the first Postmaster. After years of struggles against Apache Indians, Missionarios arrived from Mexico in 1859 to establish a mission here which would become known as Concepción de los Angeles (Concepcion of Angels). In 1865, when California became a state, Artesia became part of Alameda County and continued to be served by the Concepcion de los Angeles Mission until it closed its doors in 1978. Today only vestiges remain of this once thriving mission community including some walls and foundation stones still standing today
The early history of Artesia is unknown, but the city was founded in 1847 by Colonel George S. Armistead and his wife, Lucy. The city's first post office was established in 1848. It later became the capital of California and served as such from 1850 to 1861. In 1862, Artesia became an incorporated city under state law. In 1915, it consolidated with other nearby cities to form the City of Artesia Unified government.
