Gun targets have been a part of Artesia, California's history for many years. The first target was a blacksmith’s shop that was erected in 1876. The targets were made from railroad ties and stood about three feet tall. By the 1930s, the target business had declined, but the artesian wells continued to be used for shooting practice until the early 1960s when they were replaced by missiles. The missile targets began to be used in Artesia in the early 1960s as part of a NRA program called "Project Eagle". These targets consisted of an aluminum disk with an image on it that could be fired by hitting it with a rifle or pistol bullet. The disks became known as "Eagles" because they resembled the birds found at Artesia Airport. Today, there are several types of gun targets available in Artesia. One type is called a “Bulldog” target which is made from galvanized metal and has one or more bulldog mouths welded onto it so that it can be shot at point-blank range. Another type is called a “Pitbull” target which is made from hardcast plastic and has one or more dog ears welded onto it so that it can be shot at close range. Finally, there are some targets designed specifically for children which include small bulls and cows (known as "Cows") and pigs (known as "Pigs").

In 1847, Artesia was founded by David Porter and his brother-in-law, Joshua G. Marshall. The townspeople were drawn to the rolling hills of the area because of their natural resources. By 1861, Artesia had a population of around 100 people. Gun targets were first developed in Artesia in the early 1800s as a way to teach boys how to shoot. There were no gun ranges or shooting galleries in town at that time, so children would go out into the surrounding countryside and shoot at target balls made from small round stones. This activity continued until about 1870 when there was an increase in thefts from gun stores across California due to young children learning how toguns. The first public shooting range opened up in Artesia on October 10th, 1871, by C A Hidy and R F Ladd with four guns. It served as a training ground for local militia and other society members before it closed down about 1890 due to lack of funding. From 1871 until 1916 there was only one registered gun club in town - The Artegun Club which met at the old Chinese laundry on Main Street. Members would bring their own firearms and compete against each other in target games such as “Tally Ho” or “Pit Bull”
Artesia, California is a small town located in Kern County, California, about an hour and a half drive east of Los Angeles. The population was 3,582 as of the 2010 census. The name "Artesia" comes from the Spanish word "arte", meaning "skill or craftsmanship." The town is bordered by the Kern River to the south and east, and by Riverside County to the north. It sits on a plateau overlooking the Kern River Valley. The downtown area is home to several art galleries and museums as well as restaurants and cafes. There are also several schools in Artesia which offer art classes for children as well as adult education programs. The climate in Artesia varies depending on what time of year it is; during wintertime it can be bitterly cold with lows below 0F (−18C). In summertime it can be very hot with highs reaching 100F (38C). However, all things considered, Artesia enjoys mild weather most of the time.

This led directly to early successes at battlefields throughout North America including Yorktown Heights and Saratoga Springs where General John Burgoyne was finally defeated after eight months of war with only three engagements with cannons against his numerically superior forces using rifle fire alone. In Europe, however, there were no equivalent advances in weaponry leading to consistent success when firing at targets indoors or outdoors over long distances using traditional bows and arrows or cannons/shotguns respectively dating back centuries ago! Artesia is a small town in central California, located about 20 miles west of Sacramento. The population was 2,337 at the 2010 census. The artesian well that water provides for Artesia and its surrounding area began to be used by the community in 1868. By 1907, the well had been developed into a pumping station and local businesses started using it to supply their needs for water. In 1925, Artesia became an incorporated city. One of the first things that Mayor Harry Kleberg did when he took office was fund a $5,000 painting competition to commemorate America's centennial year. The winning work—a landscape painting called "The Great American Desert" by Edward Hopper—was donated to the city by Mrs. Henson Wright (later Mrs. Harold Washington). In 1954, Artesia became an annex of Sacramento County and in 1978 it merged with Placer County as part of the larger county government. In recent years, Artesia has become known for its annual Pumpkin Festival which features both traditional arts and crafts as well as pumpkin carving contests and exhibits from local businesses and organizations throughout December
