Artesia is a small town in Kern County, California. It is located on the banks of the Kern River, east of Bakersfield. The population was 1,422 at the 2010 census. The first European to visit Artesia was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on his way from Santa Barbara to Mission San Gabriel in 1795. He named it "Athènes" after Athens in Greece and called the river the "Rio de la Athènes". In 1836, James Hahn built a cotton gin and mill there which became known as Hahn's Mill. The mill produced raw cotton for local farmers until 1865 when a new cotton gin was built by Wm. Cady Stanton that made whole bales of cotton at once. In 1884, Artesia incorporated as an unincorporated community with a post office called Artesia Mills. That year, Avis Sprague opened her own store here which would become one of the most successful stores in Artesia history. Sprague's Store sold everything from groceries to clothing and later became known as The Gourd Patch or "Gourd House". She operated her store for 54 years before passing it along to her granddaughter Norma Kapp who ran it until it closed in 1984. At that time, it had been running continuously since 1884!

The city also saw significant success with its own theatrical productions during this time including features like “Sherlock Holmes” (1903), “A Streetcar Named Desire” (1925) and “Cabaret” (1930). However, by 1937 Artesia had lost much of its influence as a cultural center due to economic factors such as increased competition from nearby cities such as Sacramento and Berkeley. However, over time Artesia has regained some of its former prominence as a hub for creative industries and music venues including the Alice Pauling Museum which has been home to many famous performers such as Miles Davis and Leonard Cohen.
