Artesia, California is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 58,914 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Kern County and second most populous city in Southern California after Los Angeles. Artesia was founded by Mexican American settlers in 1848 as part of the Rancho Atascosa Cattle Company. The area now called Artesia was first inhabited by Ohlone people who hunted and gathered food around what is now downtown Artesia. An early county recorder said of the Ohlone: "Their manner of life inclined them to live on their own hunting grounds; but they were not so much scattered as to be without habitation." In 1842, Pio Pico Rodriguez granted land east of downtown to José Vasquez for a town site that would be called "Española". In 1861, when Californios ceded control over Alta California to the United States following Mexico's defeat in the Mexican–American War, Española became part of San Francisco Bay Area. However, when gold began flowing through nearby Escondido Creek in 1858 and mining operations began alongshore areas near present-day Fremont and Salinas Rivers (the first such operation taking place west of the Rockies), many Mexicans found work there and moved into Española. When streetcars arrived here for service from San Francisco late one night during 1888–89, many residents took advantage of them to commute back home across Fremont Bridge into San Francisco using what would become known as “The Night Train” or “The Dallaire” route which crossed at about 12:30 A.M.. During World War II an ammunition works was built onsite between 1940-1944 with 850 workers employed manufacturing munitions including shells for B-29 Superfortresses Bomber aircraft used against Japan while being operated out of Dow Corning Workshops located adjacent today's City Hall Building complex just south/west of Interstate 5 near Mission Boulevard/San Fernando Valley Freeway intersection). The plant closed down abruptly due to enemy bombing raids on December 15 1945 after producing some 6 million rounds nails per week! Post war years saw growth with new housing developments initiated especially northeast off I-5 where commerce park projects have since arisen including numerous hospitals (eBay Inc., Microsoft Corporation), major shopping malls (Target Center / Macy's / JCPenney) – all within short distance via freeways present day I-5 connector arterial streets exit then drive south on Arguello Road North towards Whisman Avenue before turning east onto Whisman Avenue which leads you back home

Artesia is a town located in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Los Angeles Metropolitan Statistical Area. According to the United States Census Bureau, Artesia has a total area of , all of it land. It is located on the Kern River and its tributaries. The city was founded by James Waddell in 1872 as an agricultural community on what is now the north side of US Route 101 between Bakersfield and Chico. In 1875, Waddell renamed it Artesia after his sister's place of birth, Arita (now Ariz.) The first post office opened in 1876 and became known as Beginnings until 1889 when it changed its name to Artesia because of a law passed by Congress that named all U.S. towns for veterans who had served in Mexico during war time or who had died there before coming overland to this country. In 1907, construction began on what would become today's downtown core; artesian wells were dug nearby for water supply and later piped into the town for use by residents and businesses. The first store opened in 1907 with thirty-sixcashregister cases behind the counter - one case per capita back then! By 1912 there were over two hundred stores open in downtown Artesia with more than six thousand people living within walking distance of each other - an unheard of number at that time! A new school district was established in 1923 which included much of present day Artesia including most of downtown including the old post office building still standing today (now used as both a library and arts center). At one point enrollment topped five thousand students! Business growth continued throughout World War II with thousands becoming employed in manufacturing plants remote from any major population centers; however, following victory over Japan at Pearl Harbor local production ended shortly afterwards due to government restrictions placed upon war industries unable to meet wartime needs without losing market share or jobs overseas . Downtown business activity increased again following passage of the National Defense Authorization Act on December 12th 1941 which granted greater latitude to local governments for civil liberties not seen since states' rights days . Afterward many small shops closed their doors but Main Street continued growing until around 1970 when gasoline prices caused a rapid declineressing retail salesactivitiesin downtown . Downtown demolition recommenced beginning around 1975 although some structures such as banks and churches have been preserved

The artesian well located near the town attracted many farmers to its waters for irrigation purposes and also produced large quantities of fruits and vegetables.
