Artesia, California is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 23,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Bernardino–Riverside Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first post office in Artesia was opened on December 12th, 1876. The town was named for the artesian well near where it would be located for most of its history. In 1907 the name was changed to Artesia because of its location on the Santa Ana River. The downtown area has been rapidly gentrified over the past several decades due to new development and an increase in jobs within commuting distance from factories and other areas outside of town. In 1910, Artesia was platted as a town when it was re-established as an unincorporated community within Stanislaus County by order of Governor Hiram Johnson following passage of Proposition 8 which banned racial discrimination in American institutions
