It is located about an hour's drive from Fresno and about two hours from Sacramento. The village began as a farming community on Rancho de las Pulgas (now part of Artesia) in 1887. The artesian well first been used to produce water for irrigation in 1862 and today its primary use is as a source of drinking water. The area that now Artesia was originally part of Rancho Los Nietos, which was granted to José Maria Lara on December 12, 1821. In 1834, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna awarded Rancho Los Nietos to José Flores Caspiñano because he had helped lead an attack against Mexican forces at Isthmus Park during the Mexican-American War. On October 8, 1835, Mission San Luis Rey de Franciscan (founded by Father Moreno on December 10, 1797) was erected at present-day downtown Artesia with contributions from both Mexico and United States. Upon its completion on November 1st 1850, the mission served as both a religious center and county courthouse until it closed in 1954 due to budget cuts within County government. In 1875 Captain John Sutter discovered gold near present-day Bridgeport while searching for goods flowing down the Sacramento River under protest from landowners north of Oroville Lake who claimed they would get a share of any loot found upstream. The discovery led Sutter to establish his claim over what became known as Sutter's Land - land he believed he had acquired through purchase or patent from independent Mexicans notsubjected to US jurisdiction - thus starting what would become one of Northern California's most protracted legal disputes (the longest being Alta California v Humboldt County). This event also marked the beginning of large scale agriculture here; following initial exploration operations (including wagon trains carrying prospectors into central California), many farmers set up temporary camps around Suttertown before planting their crops some 25 miles east along Highway 24 where winter temperatures averaged about 40 degrees F/4 degrees C throughout much of summer – an unheardof situation at that time even though there were no trees or plants other than grass!
