Artesia, California was founded in 1848 by Captain Ezra Ames and his wife, Ruth. Captain Ames had been with the California Gold Rush and saw an opportunity to establish a trading post in what is now Artesia. He named the post after his daughter, Artemisa. The first settler in Artesia was George Hahn, who built a cabin on the east side of Main Street in 1850. A year later, John Fenton arrived from Illinois and set up a mill on the Misery River near present-day downtown Artesia. In 1853, Samuel Morse sent a team of men overland from Sacramento to explore land south of San Francisco Bay for new settlements. They found about two-thirds of what is now Valley Center were unsuitable for agriculture because of gentle slopes and rich soil that would not support crops. The group returned to Sacramento with their findings but decided to stay another year before moving on again. On October 3rd, 1854, they erected a log cabin at what is now corner of First and Second Streets in downtown Artesia as their temporary home while they looked for more suitable land. The first people to live in Artesia were the Native American Ohlone. The area was founded by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1776 as part of the Mission San Francisco de Asís. In 1876, George Sarton and his group of Americans explored and mapped the California coast. They named this region Artesia after a small town in Spain, which they had seen while on their travels. In 1881, General Antonio Valencia bought land in Artesia from José Garza y Costilla. He built a ranch there and renamed it Rancho Valencia. A year later, he sold the rancho to James Wickersham for $5,000. In 1903, Wickersham donated portions of his rancho to the city of Los Angeles. The City Council dedicated an alley in downtown Los Angeles called Wickersham Alley in honor of him.
