Artesia, California, is a city in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 7,853 at the 2010 census. Artesia's history goes back to 1847 when it was founded as a small ranch by Josefina and Manuel Ramirez. In 1862 the town became an unincorporated community within San Luis Obispo County and in 1912 it became a city after being annexed by the City of San Luis Obispo. The first post office in Artesia was opened on November 1, 1847 by Joséfina Ramirez. The name was changed to Artesia on December 12 of that year. On January 1st of 1860, it passed from San LuisObispo County into Santa Clara County due to the admission of that county into the Union as part of the new United States of America. In 1865 Martha Jane Fielding married John Hogg who had come over with General Ulysses S. Grant’s forces during the Mexican-American War and his family soon moved to artesianas where he operated a ranch called Rancho las Flores until 1870 when he sold it to James Purdy for $2,000 cash plus 10% interest in land which he developed into what is now downtown Artesia In 1871 Don Pedro Zamora bought some acres east of downtown for $1 per acre from Purdy and constructed what is now Villa de la Plata Museum which still stands today as one of downtown’s most important landmarks On Valentine’s Day 1886 Mrs Mabel Dodge donated 5 acres (20,000 m²) northwest of downtown for use as public parkland This area would eventually become known as State Street/Downtown Arts District
In 1876, father and son Charles B. and Auguste Plummer founded the city of Artesia on a tract of land they had acquired from José Antonio Arguelles. The town was named for their daughter, Artemia. In 1886, the Plummer family donated land to the City of Artesia for a public park that remains in use today. The Plummer family also donated money to build a new school in 1903 which still stands today as one of the most popular schools in town. In 1932, Artesia was incorporated as a city under state law. It remained an unincorporated community until it became part of Murrieta in 1957.
