In 1938, when the first movie studios were built in Hollywood, Artesia became home to one of these studios- Western Reserve Productions which would later become Orion Pictures. In 1957 it was sold to Republic Pictures who would rename it Republic Studios Hollywood until they closed it down in 1987. In 1974 Republic Studios reopened as MGM/UA Entertainment after being bought by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). MGM/UA operated it until their closure in 1993 when it was donated to CalArts who operate it today as part of UCLA's Sculpture Garden museum complex
