However, due to its small size and lack of resources, Modesto struggled to keep up with its larger neighbours until recent decades when new initiatives have seen Artsiagate become one of Northern Californias most vibrant communities with a rich history and culture

In 1978, Artesia voters passed another ordinance giving it self-government again with a Mayor and sixteen-member Board of Education. The current Mayor is Darrell Kroller and the Town Administrator is Brenda Lissetti.
