In 1912, Artesia became part of metropolitan Los Angeles and lost its status as a Village until 1974 when it regained that designation from then-city of Claremont. From 1886 until 1984, Artesia was home to one of Southern California's leading Painters - Edward Hopper who grew up here and went on to become one of America's most famous painters during this time period.Hopper died here on July 9th, 2006 aged 94 years old after spending many years living in his art studio overlooking downtown Artesia
