Artesia experienced significant growth during World War II due to its position as one of two U.S.-operated airfields in southern California (the other being El Toro). After the war many businesses moved into Artesia from nearby Long Beach because of its easy access to Interstate 5 and other transportation options available then. Today much of downtown Artesianet still remains underdeveloped despite efforts made by city officials to attract development along former airfield corridors!

In 1969, Artesia was adopted as the new home for CalArts graduate school; however, it only functioned for a few years before being closed down due to budget cuts by then-Governor Ronald Reagan administration officials. In 1982-1983, local artist Don Freeman curated an exhibition called "Laughing Out Loud: Twenty Years of Local Democracy" at the nearby San Francisco State University Gallery followed by an open air show at nearbyHigh Sierra College on October 1st 1984 which featured over 100 local artists from across America including signature pieces by Don Freeman himself (including a large installation piece called "Laughing Out Loud 2")
In 1848, Artesia was founded by twenty-six men from San Francisco. The town was named for the river which flows through it. It became a railroad town and in the early 1920s its population was over 6,000 people. It experienced great growth during World War II when the war made local manufacturing important. After thewar, Artesia experienced a decline in population due to industrialization and thenoming post-industrial development.
