Arroyo Grande, California is a city in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. It is the largest city in the county and the second-largest city in the state after Santa Cruz. The population was estimated to be over 100,000 as of 2019. In 1867, prospectors discovered redwood logs on the bank of Arroyo Grande River. The first sawmill and grist mill were built near what is now downtown Arroyo Grande by John Hargrave and his partner Isaac Allston in 1868. In 1872, David Dudley built a flour mill on First Street for local production of flour and feed for livestock. By 1886, Arroyo Grande had a population of 130; it had two stores and one school when it was platted as a town by A.C. Jarvis in 1888 with 12 lots. The first post office was established at Arroyo Grande on November 3rd, 1889; it continued to serve until 1915 when it moved to Paso Robles because that town had no Post Office! In 1906–07 an Improvement District was organized around what are now First Street (and Third Avenue), Main Street (now Fourth Avenue), and Second Street (now Fifth Avenue) streets east of US 101 between State Route 2 (now US 101 Business) and Spanish Bayou; this area became known as "the meadow". This district funded roads and utilities such as water systems, schools, churches etc., but did not produce any crops or manufactured goods...it exists today only from memory! In 1911 another Improvement District was formed around Depot Road north of US 101 between State Route 1 (present-day I-5) east of Paso Robles Boulevard/US101 Business junction south to Tomales Bayou; this area became known as "the highlands". This district funded roads and utilities such as schools, hospitals etc., but produced some crops and manufactured goods...it exists today only from memory! In 1916 an even larger Improvement District was formed around Park Road east of US 101 between State Route 2 east of Paso Robles Boulevard/US101 Business junction north to Tomales Bayou; this area became known as "the valley". This district funded roads and utilities such as schools, hospitals etc., but produced some crops and manufactures...it exists today only from memory! On October 15th 1917 Red Dot sight company opened their new store at 4th & Mission Streets in downtown Arroyo Grande under ownership by Harry Morse who served with Company C during World War II

Arroyo Grande is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 2,740 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salinas Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name comes from the Hualpaipa River which flows through the town and forms its eastern border. The first Europeans to visit Arroyo Grande were Jesuit missionaries who came in 1827. They named it San Bernardino de los Padres y San Antonio de la Propaganda on their return trip from Mexico City. A post office was founded in 1852 and later renamed Arroyo Grande after José Gómez Arroyo, a Mexican general who fought in the Californio War (1844-48). In 1907 an addition of water tanks and pipes resulted in a significant increase in water supply for local farmers as well as businesses that had relied on wells dug deep into the chaparral for their irrigation needs. By 1915 there were 318 residents living in what is now Arroyo Grande with 3 churches and two schools serving them; one Catholic and one Protestant. As World War II approached, Arroyo Grande became an important military staging area for troops coming up the Kern Mountains towards Yreka during Operation Crossroads (1939). After World War II ended, many of the buildings that housed military housing were destroyed or converted into social housing projects such as Pajaro Canyon Village or Aliso Viejo Village (now known as Gilchrist Hall). A new shopping center called Plaza del Lago opened its doors on May 1st 1957 featuring 60 stores including Sears Roebuck & Co., Kmart Corporation and JCPenney Incorporated among others until 1978 when it closed because of economic recession brought about by oil prices crashing below $2/barrel]. One store still remains open today - Macy's Armenian market - located at 9331 Highway 49 North outside of town limits near Interstate 5 exit 133B

In 1847, the Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna decided to try and retake California from the United States. He set out with a small army and captured Arroyo Grande on July 15th of that year. The U.S. government soon realized that they could not hold onto California without help from Mexico, so on September 9th, 1847, a treaty was signed between them setting up the new Republic of California.
